Tire Tread Depth At Adams Tireworx in Castro Valley, we often get asked about tire tread depth. It’s actually fairly easy to measure it yourself.  Tire tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. The typical new tire has a tread depth of 10/32nd or 11/32nd of an inch (winter tires and light truck tires are typically deeper).   As the tire wears down, the tread depth diminishes. At 2/32nd tread depth, a tire is considered legally worn out in most US states.  At our Castro Valley tire shop we use a special tool to measure tire depth. But at home, there is an easy way to tell - take a penny, and stick it, Lincoln’s head down, in the groove of the tire. If you can see Lincoln’s entire head – the tire is worn down to 2/32nd of an inch.
